A Day in the Life of an Events and Marketing Professional: Visiting Ho Chi Minh City in June 2022
Traveling the world as a project manager for GroundBreaker Productions offers a unique blend of professional challenges and personal adventures. In June 2022, I had the pleasure of spending five days in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, organizing recruitment events for international student recruiters. This bustling city, rich in history and culture, provided the perfect backdrop for a mix of work and leisure. Here’s a detailed account of my experience.

Day 1: Arrival and Initial Meetings
Morning: Arrival in Ho Chi Minh City
The journey began with an early morning flight landing at Tan Son Nhat International Airport. The humid air and the lively atmosphere of Ho Chi Minh City welcomed me. After a quick ride to my hotel in District 1, I checked in and prepared for the day's meetings.
Afternoon: Meeting with Local Partners
The afternoon was dedicated to meeting with our local partners who play a crucial role in the success of our recruitment events. These meetings involved finalizing the schedule for the educational fairs, coordinating visits to local schools, and discussing logistics for presentations. The partners were enthusiastic and offered valuable insights into the preferences and expectations of Vietnamese students and parents.
Evening: Networking Dinner
Dinner was a networking event with some of the local agents and school representatives at a charming rooftop restaurant. The conversation flowed easily over a delightful spread of Vietnamese cuisine, including fresh spring rolls and succulent grilled seafood. This was a perfect opportunity to build rapport and discuss future collaborations.
Day 2: Educational Fair and School Visits
Morning: Setting Up the Fair
The second day started early as we set up for the educational fair at a prominent hotel. Ensuring that the booths were well-arranged and the promotional materials were in place was a team effort. The excitement in the air was palpable as we anticipated the arrival of students and their parents.
Afternoon: Engaging with Prospective Students
The fair was a whirlwind of activity. Hundreds of students, eager to explore their educational opportunities abroad, filled the hall. I assisted the recruiters in engaging with the students, providing information about various programs, and answering queries about life abroad. The students' enthusiasm was infectious, making the event both exhausting and exhilarating.
Evening: School Visit and Presentation
Post-fair, we visited a local high school where I delivered a presentation on the benefits of studying abroad and how GroundBreaker Productions can assist schools in facilitating these opportunities for their students. The presentation was well-received, with many students expressing interest in the services we offer.
Night: Exploring the Nightlife
After a productive day, it was time to unwind. Ho Chi Minh City is known for its vibrant nightlife, and we headed to a popular bar in District 1. The lively atmosphere, coupled with great music and a friendly crowd, made for a perfect evening. Dancing the night away was a great way to relax and soak in the city's energetic vibe.
Day 3: More School Visits and Partner Meetings
Morning: School Presentations
The third day started with visits to two more schools. Each visit included a presentation and Q&A session. The students were inquisitive, asking about the application process, scholarships, and life in various countries. These interactions are crucial in understanding their aspirations and tailoring our services to meet their needs.
Afternoon: Partner Strategy Session
In the afternoon, I met with several of our key partners to discuss long-term strategies. We explored ways to enhance our events, improve student engagement, and streamline the application process. These meetings are essential in ensuring that we stay ahead of trends and continue to offer top-notch services.
Evening: Dinner and Dancing
The evening was another chance to experience the local nightlife. This time, we opted for a trendy club known for its eclectic music and vibrant dance floor. The mix of expats and locals created a dynamic atmosphere, making it a memorable night. The city's nightlife truly offers something for everyone, making it a perfect place to unwind after a busy day.
Day 4: Exploring the City
Morning: Historical Exploration at the War Remnants Museum
With the work part of the trip behind us, the fourth day was dedicated to exploring Ho Chi Minh City. The first stop was the War Remnants Museum. The exhibits provide a sobering look at the Vietnam War from the Vietnamese perspective. The museum's powerful displays and stories were both educational and deeply moving.
Afternoon: Ben Thanh Market and Local Cuisine
After a morning steeped in history, we headed to Ben Thanh Market. The market is a bustling hub of activity, offering everything from souvenirs to street food. Wandering through the stalls, I sampled various local delicacies like bánh mì and Vietnamese iced coffee. The vibrant atmosphere and the friendly banter with vendors added to the charm.
Late Afternoon: Architectural Wonders
Next, we visited the Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica and the Central Post Office. These iconic landmarks, remnants of the French colonial era, are must-see attractions. The basilica, with its towering spires, and the post office, designed by Gustave Eiffel, are stunning examples of Gothic and Renaissance architecture.
Evening: Dinner and Drinks
Dinner was at a riverside restaurant, offering a fusion of traditional Vietnamese and modern cuisine. The highlight was the spectacular view of the Saigon River. Post-dinner, we explored another popular bar in the city. The lively music and energetic crowd made it a perfect place to dance and celebrate the successful work trip.
Day 5: Cultural Immersion and Farewell
Morning: Mekong Delta Tour
The final day was dedicated to a cultural immersion tour of the Mekong Delta. A short drive from the city, the delta offers a serene escape from the urban hustle. We took a boat ride through the waterways, visited local villages, and learned about traditional Vietnamese life. The lush landscapes and the tranquil pace were a stark contrast to the city’s buzz.
Afternoon: Cu Chi Tunnels
In the afternoon, we visited the Cu Chi Tunnels. This extensive network of underground tunnels was used during the Vietnam War and provides a fascinating glimpse into the ingenuity and resilience of the Vietnamese people. Crawling through the narrow passages was both thrilling and humbling.
Evening: Farewell Dinner
The trip concluded with a farewell dinner at a chic rooftop restaurant. Overlooking the city’s skyline, we reminisced about the week’s events, the new connections made, and the experiences shared. The meal, featuring a delectable array of Vietnamese dishes, was the perfect end to an unforgettable trip.
Night: Final Night Out
For our final night, we hit one last bar, determined to make the most of our time in Ho Chi Minh City. The music, the people, and the electric atmosphere made for a fantastic end to the trip. Dancing late into the night, we celebrated not just the successful work week but also the vibrant spirit of this incredible city.

Conclusion: A Perfect Blend of Work and Play
My five-day trip to Ho Chi Minh City was a perfect blend of professional accomplishments and cultural exploration. The city's dynamic energy, rich history, and welcoming people made it an ideal destination for both work and leisure. As a project manager for GroundBreaker Productions, such trips are invaluable, offering insights that help us better serve our clients while also enriching our personal experiences.
